The townships of Washington, Decatur, Symmes, Elizabeth, Aid, Mason, Hamilton, Upper, Lawrence, Windsor, Perry, Fayette, Union and Rome; the villages of Hanging Rock, Coal Grove, South Point, Burlington, Chesapeake, Proctorville and Athalia; and the city of Ironton make up the 455.4 square miles of Lawrence County, Ohio. Ironton serves as the county seat. The total population for the county is 62,900.
The Wayne National Forest is located here and is enjoyed by both tourists and county residents. The national forest offers wonderful nature activities and is home to some of the most interesting relics of the area’s vigorous industrial past. For example, the historical Vesuvius Iron Furnace, built in 1833, is located within the forest. Many lakes can be found here as well.
